Biomimicry: learning from Nature
David is a registered architect and is an avid gardener. Over the years, he has designed both large and small private oases in places such as Bali, Singapore, and Vancouver.
Since the 1970's, he has maintained one of Canada's largest collections of carnivorous plants, and has trekked the world to observe these botanical wonders. These plants – their colours, structure, and habitat adaptations, have been much of his design inspiration… biomimicry.
His background in biological sciences support his designs with nature. David encourages work with native species, explores the use of local and recycled materials to create memorable spaces for life – outdoor 'living rooms' for people, and urban habitats for critters. He endeavours to educate clients and engage project team members to promote this passion.
Where possible, rainwater is collected, naturally filtered (eg. through bog plantings) and stored for irrigation, either through a pond or a cistern.
